Five Minutes

I was watching the grandkids the other day. They were seated nicely at my kitchen counter, Lexi (age three) painting and Mason (age two) coloring ... all was well. Mason seemed to have accepted the fact that I was NOT going to let him paint. My phone rang. Chaos ensued. I swear to you that I was only on the phone for FIVE minutes, and all this happened:

Lexi exclaimed, "I have to go potty NOW!"

So I let her down from the barstool, and she made a beeline for the bathroom. Since the paints were still out, I had to stay with Mason, but I followed her to the stairs so I could watch

But Today

Yesterday, I felt relief as I watched my son shuffle up the sidewalk toward his school.  His beloved Spiderman backpack was jiggling with each step.  It was light and bouncy on his back because all he had in it was his matching Spiderman folder and a little white envelope holding his lunch money.
   
I waited in our car until he reached the entrance to make sure he made it safely inside.  He opened the heavy metal door and then took a few steps back while pulling with all his two-fisted, first grade might.  Then a glance back at me and a seven-year-old grin as he released the handle to pop inside before the door clanged shut.
